Our Program

The performance center is located within BHF Kalamazoo’s fitness center and offers the latest specialized training and testing equipment.

We work with athletes of all sports and ages from all over west Michigan. We’ve had the pleasure of coaching athletes from many local middle and high schools, as well as:

  • Kalamazoo College (Football)
  • Kalamazoo Valley Community College
  • WMU Women’s Skate Team and Football

Our performance program is led by certified professionals who have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and a passion for safe training focused on measurable results.

 Tuff Tread™ Speed Training

Speed training is one of the most effective techniques to improve athleticism across the board. Here, the Tuff Tread™ is our tool of choice. This industry leading treadmill can take athletes to speeds up to 30mph and an incline of 40%!

Plans are progressive and are tailored to the individual and sport. After an 8-week speed training program, athletes have noticed improvements including:

  • First-Step Quickness
  • Vertical Jump (2″ avg gain)
  • Injury Resistance
  • Rate of Acceleration
  • Change in Direction Speed
  • Overall Top Speed

Speed training “trains the brain,” building neuro pathways by pushing the body beyond its perceived limits.

Specialized equipment and testing protocols make your fitness levels clear, paving the path to progress. Testing offerings at BHF Kalamazoo include:

  • RMR Resting Metabolic Rate
  • Body Composition Testing
  • VO2 Cardiorespiratory Fitness: Determines your maximum aerobic capacity, plus lactate threshold. This data is compiled and given to athletes with a customized training plan for ultimate performance.
  • Injury prevention and mobility assessment: Our coaches analyze athletes’ baseline range of motion, as well as assess injury risk and employ a training plan to improve overall mobility and safety.
  • Vertical Jump Test: The VertiMax measures an athlete’s baseline vertical jump and progress after training.
